The Smyrna Opera House has six ticketed shows between now and mid-November. Two of them are 3 p.m. Saturday matinees, and those are the only two where every downtown kitchen near 7 W South St is open before the curtain and still open after it comes down. The other four start at 7:30 p.m. and end around 9:30. By that hour, most of the places within a few blocks have closed for the night, based on their latest posted hours.
None of this is a reason to skip the evening shows. It just means picking the show and picking dinner go together. Get the order wrong on a Saturday night and you can end up at a 7:30 tribute act having eaten nothing since lunch.
Six Shows, Set Against the Kitchen Clock
Here's the fall calendar, with what's open around each one. Restaurant hours come from each business's most recent listing, and restaurant hours change, so call ahead before you build an evening around them.
| Date | Show | Curtain | Doors | Open after the show ends |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sat., Oct. 10 | Van Halen Nation | 7:30 p.m. | 6:45 p.m. | Brick Works until 10 p.m. |
| Sat., Oct. 17 | Absolute Adele with Jennifer Cella | 3 p.m. | 2:15 p.m. | Dixie's, Elizabeth Esther Café, Painted Stave, Brick Works |
| Sat., Oct. 24 | Real Love: Kenny Rogers & Dolly Parton Tribute | 7:30 p.m. | 6:45 p.m. | Brick Works until 10 p.m. |
| Fri., Oct. 30 | Slippery When Wet NJ | 7:30 p.m. | 6:45 p.m. | Brick Works until 10 p.m. |
| Fri., Nov. 6 | Purple Piano | 7:30 p.m. | 6:45 p.m. | Brick Works until 10 p.m. |
| Sat., Nov. 14 | Destination Soultown featuring the Sensational Soul Cruisers | 3 p.m. | 2:15 p.m. | Dixie's, Elizabeth Esther Café, Painted Stave, Brick Works |
Door times assume the Opera House's standard practice of opening 45 minutes before each performance. Brick Works Brewing & Eats sits out at 230 S. DuPont Hwy., so it's a short drive from the theater, not a stroll. Its listing shows it open until 10 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. Sheridan's Irish Pub isn't in the table because we couldn't confirm its current hours. More on Sheridan's below.
Why the 3 P.M. Saturdays Line Up So Well
On a Saturday, Dixie's Down Home Cooking at 2 N. Main St. is listed as open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., the longest day in its week. Elizabeth Esther Café at 47 E. Commerce St. runs brunch from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays and stays open until 8. Painted Stave Distilling at 106 W. Commerce St. opens its tasting room at 2 p.m. on Saturdays and closes at 9.
That gives Absolute Adele on October 17 and Destination Soultown on November 14 a full setup. You can have brunch on Commerce Street, walk in for 2:15 doors, and come out at 5 with three or more downtown options still serving. Those are the only two dates this fall that work that way.
Dixie's is also the newest piece of the downtown picture. Bill and Kim Newsom took their food truck into a permanent storefront in March 2026, and the News Journal covered the opening that week. The building is roughly 200 years old, put together from three formerly separate structures. Its corner space was Vance Cole's barbershop for about 60 years. The same address later housed Sweets & Treats and Lemon Leaf Coffee Shop.
A few things are good to know before you sit down at Dixie's on a show day:
- Menu: Carolina-style pulled pork and chicken, gumbo, shrimp and grits, seafood po' boys, brisket, salmon, meatloaf and burgers. Sides include hush puppies, fried green tomatoes, sweet-potato casserole and Cajun collards.
- Drinks: No alcohol. The restaurant serves mocktails and flavored drinks instead.
- Payment: Cash is preferred, and credit cards carry a 4% surcharge.
- Discounts: 5% off for military and first responders on Mondays, teachers on Tuesdays, seniors on Wednesdays and pastors on Thursdays. On your birthday, you get a discount equal to your age as a percentage.
Since Dixie's doesn't serve alcohol, a matinee afternoon splits nicely: lunch on North Main, then a cocktail on West Commerce once the show lets out.
Friday Shows Get Commerce Street's Evening Window
Painted Stave's tasting room is open Thursday and Friday from 5 to 9 p.m. The Taco Jardin truck is parked on site nearly every hour the distillery is open. For Slippery When Wet NJ on October 30 and Purple Piano on November 6, that gives you a 5 p.m. arrival, tacos and a cocktail, and plenty of time to reach the Opera House for 6:45 doors.
A few house rules shape who comes along. Painted Stave serves only its own spirits, plus a handful of local beers and wines. Seating is first come, first served. Groups of drinking adults 21 and over can bring well-behaved kids 13 and older. Dogs aren't allowed, though registered service animals are welcome. Groups of 10 or more should ask for seating at least 48 hours ahead, and they'll need a deposit.
If you'd rather have a sit-down meal, Elizabeth Esther Café serves dinner until 8 p.m. Tuesday through Friday. Dixie's closes at 8 on Fridays, too. Either one works if you sit down by about 5:30.
The Saturday 7:30 Shows Need an Early Table
Van Halen Nation on October 10 and Real Love on October 24 are the tight ones. Painted Stave stays open until 9 on Saturdays, but the show doesn't end until 9:30. Dixie's and Elizabeth Esther both close at 8, more than an hour before the encore. On these nights, dinner has to happen before doors open.
That puts dinner in the 5 to 6:30 range, which is early for a Saturday but easy to plan. If you'd rather eat after the show, Brick Works is the dependable bet in town. Its listed Saturday close of 10 p.m. leaves about half an hour once the house lights come up, so call ahead and ask how late the kitchen takes orders.
Sheridan's Irish Pub at 44 W. Commerce St. is the downtown spot that could change the late-night math. Cousins Jennifer Sutter and Robert Duffy took over in 2025, keeping the pub locally owned, as Bay to Bay News reported in January. The pub serves Irish and American food with drinks and takes online orders. We couldn't confirm its closing time, so call the pub before you count on a post-show plate there.
The Free Thursday That Works for Everyone
One night this fall needs no ticket at all. The Opera House's third floor is hosting a local art exhibition, "Abstract, Non-Objective, Fantasy, Surrealism: Think, Ponder, Wonder," from October 6 through November 6. The free opening reception is Thursday, October 8, at 6 p.m., with food, a bar and music.
A Thursday reception overlaps with Painted Stave's 5 to 9 p.m. hours, and the reception has its own bar. So this is the one fall evening at the Opera House where the timing problem from the Saturday shows doesn't come up. If you miss the reception, the gallery is open weekdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. through November 6, and until 7 p.m. on Thursdays. A Thursday visit that ends at 7 still leaves you two hours at Painted Stave before it closes at 9.
Another daytime event is worth knowing about if someone in your household is a caregiver. Music and Memories, a gathering for caregivers and the people they care for, runs Wednesday, October 21, from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Doors open at 11, and registration is required.
Before You Leave the House
- Buy tickets through the Opera House site. The show pages link to eTix and specifically warn against resellers. Start at smyrnaoperahouse.org.
- Call the box office if you have questions. Office hours are Tuesday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., at (302) 653-4236. That's the place to ask about concessions or bar service at a regular show, which we couldn't confirm.
- Know which side the parking lot is on. Coming from the north, the lot entrance is just past the building on the right. Coming from the south, it's just before the building on the left.
- Bring cash for Dixie's to skip the 4% card surcharge.
If you're at Slippery When Wet NJ on Friday, October 30, keep in mind the next morning starts early in town. The first Halloween Hustle 5K/Walk runs Saturday, October 31, from 8 to 11 a.m. at Smyrna High School, 500 Duck Creek Parkway. Proceeds go to the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition. Dixie's opens at 8 a.m. that Saturday, so you can get breakfast on North Main after the race.
Getting the timing right is most of the work, whether it's a 3 p.m. curtain or a closing time. After nearly 40 years around Smyrna and New Castle County, Will Webber pays attention to the details that make a place work day to day, the same way this post checks show times against kitchen hours. If you have questions about Smyrna, from Saturday plans to longer-term ones, let's connect.
